Billy finds the creased three-by-five under a pile of toys in Heather's room. He puts it between the pages of an encyclopedia. A week later he takes it out and pins it to the refrigerator with a pasta-covered magnet she had made at school. The day she'd brought that home had been the same day Terry left, the same day Dom's stay at the Boyd house had become permanent. That was the day "Uncle Dom" became someone else. Someone Billy could never put out of his heart again. He stares at the image of Dom holding her and he remembers. |
